Rescue Me ID: 14-11-07-00093Chuka (male)

Cairn Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Chuka is a 19 pound wire-haired terrier mix, about 8 years old. He is a terrier through and through. He is really smart and intense and sweet. He knows commands and easily learns new ones. He's a great indoor companion---- loves to snuggle, play, sit on laps, etc. He could probably spend all day under a blanket, but equally would love to walk, do agility, other exercise---and probably better for his brain. He has done doggie daycare and gets great behavior reviews from doggie daycare and grooming. Here's the thing with Chuka: he is insanely leash aggressive. He cannot be introduced to ANYONE on leash because he will bite-- this means dogs, ... (Read More)cats, adults, children, etc. ANYONE. He pulls, snarls, and barks aggressively on leash, and his 19 pounds feels like 50 because he is trying to get whatever dog is nearby. It takes great and consistent effort to get Chuka to walk without doing said behaviors. The person that takes Chuka would need to be an experienced dog owner. While he loves his other doggie housemate and does doggie daycare, Chuka should probably be their only pet so he can receive that consistent training and attention. I wouldn't put him in a home with young children (he's been very respectful of our infant daughter, but she's not on the move yet) because he could be excited by them and bite---I don't know. A dog park is probably not a good idea either. The ideal home would be an experienced dog owner that wants a cuddle lap dog and can also be the dominant leader, providing consistency with Chuka's training. He will work hard to follow commands and will make someone a great companion. Please let me know if you have any questions---I'm happy to discuss Chuka further with any interested people. We can also drive him to neighboring states if it means a good home. Thank you! (Less)

Cairn Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Rosie is a happy, spirited 2 year old, 10 lb Norfolk terrier mix. She starts out a little shy but once she knows she is safe, she is very connected to her human. She is looking for a home with a yard to run off some of her energy. She is very quick and loves to run high speed in circles around the trees leaving the other dogs well behind in a game of chase. Rosie gets along with other dogs and cats. She prefers dogs her size. Like any terrier, she needs a person who knows how to be a leader. Every terrier tries to be 5 steps ahead of you; her person needs to be 6 steps ahead of her!! Her person should have previous terrier ... (Read More)experience for the best fit. Rosie is crate trained and house-trained. But like any new situation, there is always a learning curve in a new environment. Rosie's adoption donation covers her spay, vaccinations, microchip, dental, fecal and heartworm check. If you are interested in adopting Rosie, please contact us. We work full time and will respond as quickly as we can, but please allow us time to get back to you. (Less)

Cairn    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Dora is a very beautiful, smart and opinionated, three-year-old, female Cairn Terrier looking for a loving guardian. Poor Dora was dropped off at Chicago Animal Care and Control when her family no longer wanted her. We don't know how she was raised or what she went through, but she needs a very special, patient, understanding and dog-experienced family. She is an utterly adorable, independent little girl, who enjoys playing with her toys and receiving attention - on her own terms. Dora knows how to sit on command and if you pull out a treat her tail wags happily. She takes treats nicely from your fingers. Wherever she came from, she was not ... (Read More)accustomed to being touched and handled. She is affectionate with the people that she knows and loves. But, there are certain places that even those that she loves cannot touch her %BD like her back end. And, she does not like to be picked up from the ground, however she'll jump right in your lap and you can pick her up from there. So, she is quirky but not completely un-manageable. Dora has a few dog friends that are about her size or smaller, but she is afraid of larger dogs. So, she's looking for a home as the only dog or with another compatible small dog. Dora is very healthy, spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped, heartworm-tested and on monthly preventative. To meet and possibly adopt Dora, please fill in the on-line adoption application at and follow up by contacting Gloria at or 773-907-0305. Her adoption fee of $200 benefits the rescued pets of Famous Fido's. Dora is staying at rescue headquarters at 5430 N. Clark Street in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood. PIease Read Before Adopting a Cairn in Illinois
Cairn Dogs can make good pets in Illinois if they match your IifestyIe. The Cairn Terrier is a shaggy, spunky little dog with tons of energy and personality. The indefatigable Cairn is full of energy and is very lovable. Cairns love to dig, chase, and bark. Cairns are very active and need plenty of exercise but adapt well to apartment life. Cairns like to do tricks and are very trainable. Cairns are wonderful with children. A Cairn can be very territorial and should be watched for a tendency to take on much larger dogs if it feels threatened.
